Picking at the Fibres of the Women In My History, 2018
Mixed media on laserprint
(2nd image at The Artists Guild)
Inspired by pre and post colonial and contemporary iconographic imagery and adornment specific to Central America and the Latin diaspora, Suárez plays dress ups in an attempt to carve a space for herself between the multiple histories of her ancestry.
She highlights the tension between the domestic and the divine; the domestication of the eroticised brown savage woman and the pure and noble third world anonymous woman, victim to the male warlords, on the cover of the National Geographic.
